Palimpsest
2023, 3 min, Two-Channel 4k videoPalimpsest is a greek manuscript where past writings are erased for new writings with traces underneath. The film conceptuallizes memory through both the audio and the imagery. It originates from seeing the abundance of donated glasssware in a local second hand store. These bowls and wine glasses are stories of past owners, but soon will be bought and replaced with new stories. These shelves of collected glassware become intermediary spaces between remembering and forgetting. The audio is inspired by “I Am Sitting in a Room” by Alivin Lucier, where found audio of people trying to remember their past is played back and re-recorded until sound becomes distorted and blurry. In the stream of forgetting and rewriting memories, the film documents the echoes, the traces of what existed.
This short film is a visual essay with philosophical reflections on memory, and potentially will be developed into a longer form.
