Lian Liu is a multidisciplinary visual artist from Shanghai, China. She earned her BA in Studio Arts and Computer Science from Wellesley College. Her art practice began with an introductory moving image course at Wellesley, where she began experimenting with video art and nonlinear storytelling. She found freedom and poetry in abstract art forms. Since then Lian expanded her work to include photography, painting, and bookmaking. Her art practice is anchored in close observation of her visual surroundings and aims to create resonance through abstraction.

I am a studio art major at Wellesley College and a multidisciplinary visual artist. I work with a wide range of media including painting, photography, sound, video, and technology. My practice is inherently time-based across varying mediums. I create art from quiet observations of my visual surrounding, drawing inspiration from dappled light, shifting shadows, or other ordinary phenomena. My work speaks to a layered yet poetic experience of the world through abstraction and intervention with text and media.

I consider my art practice as a form of meditation—a way of reconciling with personal history and collective pain. In observing ephemeral moments, I explore the intersection of the particular with the universal, seeking shared meaning beyond individual experiences.
